Travelling while pregnant: Everything You need to Know

Travelling while pregnant: Everything You need to Know

You probably heard a million reasons why you should not travel while being pregnant. And it all made you worry and you might even reconsider the idea. Is travelling while pregnant safe? What should you do and how to prepare for a vacation while pregnant? Here is everything you need to know.

Travelling now seems like a wonderful idea. First, it is summertime. You and your family probably need to relax and have fun after a year of a global pandemic. And if you are pregnant in the first or second trimester, you would want to travel before being unable to do so. While some soon-to-be mums are afraid of traveling while pregnant, we believe they shouldn’t be. And here is why.

Is it safe to travel while pregnant?

While we want to say yes, the right answer is up to you and your doctor. If your pregnancy is stable and your doctor says it is safe to travel, then go ahead and book your flight. So, check with your doctor and make all the necessary tests before anything. The best time to travel while pregnant is after the first trimester. At this time, you will be done with morning sickness and constant nausea. Also, this stage is safer for both you and your unborn baby.

When is the best time to travel during pregnancy?

As we mentioned, the best time for travelling while pregnant is after the first trimester. Approximately after week number 36 and until the end of your second trimester. If you’re considering travelling after your second trimester, then you need to check with your doctor and the airlines you are traveling with. Some airlines do not allow pregnant mums to travel with them during their final trimester. If this is the case, then you need the required paperwork in coordination with your doctor.

Important tips for travelling while pregnant

1| Get all the necessary documents.

Ask your doctor a copy of all your latest tests. If there were any notes or instructions from your doctor, make sure to have them written and signed. Also, if you need to take certain medication, make sure to have the prescription with you. You should also get your insurance information in case you needed medical care while you are away. Having all the necessary documents is very important when you are travelling while pregnant.

You can keep those important documents in a file to keep them safe and access them quickly when needed.

2| Avoid airport security scanning.

Once you get to the airport, you are going to face several x-ray scanners for security. Ask the security staff to get individually searched instead to avoid the harmful x-rays. Don’t worry, the security staff is well trained with these cases and they will assist you. All you got to do is have your medical record at hand to avoid any delays.

3| Drink a lot of water, and always have a snack at hand.

Experts agree that pregnant women need to drink 8 to 12 cups of water a day to stay hydrated. This also keep both the mum and unborn baby healthy. You will probably need even more when travelling. So make sure to always have a bottle of water at hand during your journey. Also, you will need snacks. Pack healthy ones like vegetables and fruits. Avoid salty snacks as they will dehydrate you and cause fluid retention.

4| Get an aisle seat.

Everyone loves the window seat. However, when pregnant, you will want to pick comfort over nice views. Keep in mind that you will probably go to the bathroom a few times, so getting the aisle seat will make less of a hassle. In addition, many doctors recommend pregnant mums to keep moving to avoid feet swelling. So, during your flight you will need to get up and move around for a minute or two frequently. Having the aisle seat will make the flight easier.

5| Relax, and ask for help when you need it.

Keep in mind not to over stress in order not to ruin the main part of your trip which is to have fun. Do your best to relax through listening to calming music, or watching a comedy film during your flight. Make sure not to carry the heavy luggage by yourself. Many airports offer helping services. Call ahead before your flight and book with them so you won’t over exhaust yourself. They will assign someone to meet you at the airport entrance and stay with you till you board your plane. Also, ask the flight attendance to help you put your carry on in the cabin. Relax, and keep thinking of the fun things you will get to experience during your vacation.
