We all know how horrible it is to be on the receiving end of bullying, of any kind be it in the workplace or at school. This is not just another article about bullying; we all know that you need to educate your kids enough that they tell someone if they are being bullied, someone they trust. Every parent knows that the only real answer to cope with bullying is to love, support and encourage your child through this.
The real difference between bullying now and bullying in our day is the online factor that currently exists. In today’s day and age, bullying has found its way from the playground to cyberspace. Kids still say nasty things face to face and, yes, kids still punch each other, but less so. Unfortunately, the old saying of ”Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” does not apply anymore in the age of social media.
If you have a child between six and twelve, save these rules and recite them as part of your bedtime story. None of the rules mention bullying but they are like gravity, you don’t need to understand them for them to work.
Cool rules for cool kids!
Rule One – This is your life, you have been lucky enough to receive a body, so accept it! Look after and love your body by eating good food, sleeping well and exercising every day. It’s the only body you’ll ever have, treat it well.
Rule Two – Love is everywhere! The world is mostly full of great people, but there will be a few, let’s call them haters. Social media now makes it easier for them to spread lousy stuff. If someone does say something awful, stop, take a step back and think it through. Yes, it hurts. But is it really that bad? Being hated by a hater? It’s what they do. They do it to lots of people. They do it because, deep down, they actually dislike themselves. Be the bigger and better person, stay kind. Yes, kind even to the haters. I know it’s hard, but they need to be loved, sometimes those who deserve it the least are the ones who need it the most.
Rule Three– Life is all about learning to dance in the rain! There are highs, and there are lows. Not everyone will like you; you will not like everyone. When you’re up, your friends know who you are. When you’re down, you know who your friends are. That’s how it is. Just because one person doesn’t seem to care for you, doesn’t mean you should forget about everyone else who does.
Rule Four – Always be kind! Kindness the key to happiness and it’s totally free.
