Mumz Guide to Choosing the Best Car Seats

Mumz Guide to Choosing the Best Car Seats

Car seats are right up there with the hardest items to shop for when welcoming a new baby. Especially for new parents. But as difficult as the task might be, they’re also one of the first things parents cross off their shopping lists. Why? Well for starters, you can’t leave a hospital with a newborn unless there is one. So, it’s safe to say that it’s not a task you want to put off even if you’re not planning on taking your baby anywhere. Because we know how confusing the different age groups, sizes, features, and designs are (have we lost you yet?) we’ve prepared a preliminary guide to help you get started.

1| Take a look at your car

The number one first thing you need to do, is take a look at your car. After all, you can’t buy a baby seat if you’re not sure how it’ll fit in your car. So, how big are your seats? Will a it with a big base fit comfortably?

2| Decide between a Convertible or an Infant Car Seat

Babies can only be seated in rear-facing car seats, for safety reasons. So, the only option here is whether you want a convertible car seat that is rear-facing that can later be turned to face forward as your baby enters toddlerhood or an infant rear-facing only car seat. The only difference, other than the positions, is that with the latter, you’ll have to repurchase a forward facing car seat as your baby grows whereas a convertible one will last you around 2 years.

3| Consider a Travel System

If you’re out and about a lot, and predict you and your baby will be to, then there’s nothing like the convenience of rolling them around in a stroller with the car seat attached. These are also usually budget-friendly and very easy to take in an out of the car. Perfect for when you’re on the go!

4| Prioritize Safety Features

Safety. Safety. And Safety. Always look for the best safety features in car seats, these would be: impact protection, 5 -point harness system, and extra padding near the head. Another important thing to look out for is how easily adjustable the straps are. As your baby grows, you’ll need to keep readjusting the straps, and so you want to make sure it’s going to be an easy job!

5-Do your research

Tutorials are your friends. Watch as many of them as you can and make sure you read up before you make your final decision
