New parents strive to do everything possible to provide the absolute best they can for their children across all aspects of their wellbeing. Having said that, once you have the baby, you get sent home with this tiny bundle of joy without any training, any manual of what to do with him or her. Here at Mumzworld we strive to be your go-to for all things parenting, easing the anxiety that can build up with the responsibility of caring for these precious little humans.
We believe that one of the most important things and often overlooked amongst all the diapers, feeding and toy options is how to manage an emergency situation should it occur.
Here’s our top tips to be prepared:
Learn first Aid and CPR
Enroll in first aid and CPR classes to learn how to think and act quickly and remain calm in emergencies. We can recommend Safe Hands UAE who offer courses for parents and caregivers in English and Tagalog. As a general rule of thumb, you should do a refresher course of this every two years to be top of your game. You never know when these skills might save the life of either your own child or the child of someone else.
Prepare a first aid kit
A first aid kit should include a variety of things, and there are many ready-made options with everything you will need. A top tip is to have them around the home, car and workplace. If your child also spends time at any families home, get one there as well.
Know how to deal with burns
If an infant suffers an injury, cool the burn under cold running water for a minimum of 10 minutes if the burn is significant or severe immediately call emergency services or head to your closest ER.
Head injuries
If your baby suffers a knock to the head you will need to monitor and if any of the following occurs head straight to the ER or call emergency services.
– Becoming unconscious
– Drowsy
– Vomiting
– Anything which you feel might is abnormal
Nosebleeds
In the event of a nosebleed, pinch the soft part of a baby’s nose for about 10 minutes. If the nosebleed continues, head to the ER or call an ambulance.
Lower the temperature of a fever
An infant who displays hot flushed skin and is sweating may be experiencing a fever. Remove the infants excess clothing and check the babies temperature. If the fever continues despite attempts to cool off and recommended dose of paracetamol based on weight is not helping manage the fever, head to the ER.
Cleaning wounds properly
To treat injuries a parent should first wash their hands, following this apply an antibacterial ointment to the wound and cover the affected area with a bandage. Monitor the wound in the coming days and if it doesn’t appear to be healing well visit your Paediatrician.
Manage insect bites
Apply a cold compress or rub an ice cube on the skin for a few seconds to reduce swelling and pain. If you are unsure if the bite origin and your child appears to be becoming unwell, call emergency services or head directly to the ER.
Possibly the most important tip, never leave your baby unattended – It only takes a second for an accident to happen, the best way is always prevention so never leave an infant unattended.
