Top Tips for Mums Looking to Get Fit!

Top Tips for Mums Looking to Get Fit!

Hello Mumz! I am Charlotte from F45 Training Downtown Dubai. I have been in the fitness industry for over 5 years, helping women and mums alike to find themselves again. I also have a little delightful monster of my own, so I know exactly how hard it can be physically, mentally and emotionally. This is why I want to share some tips with you.

A question I often get asked is ‘Should I exercise whilst I’m pregnant?’ Of course, each person is different and always check with your doctor before exercising but for me it is such a good idea, even if you were not active before pregnancy. Why? Because not only can it help get your baby into a good position for birth but it will also help you during and after birth. My recovery after giving birth was quick and I owe this to exercise and keeping active whilst pregnant. We do need to dial down the intensity, whether that’s lifting weights or cardio and some movements are a big no no – so please always consult your doctor beforehand.

Whether this is your first baby or you already have a family, I want to share some tips that helped me navigate fitness as a Mum.

Top Tips for Mums Looking to Get Fit!

Make time for yourself:

I know it’s hard with children to have even 2 minutes to yourself but here is where you call on a nanny or friend to watch them for 2 hours – this will give you enough time to workout, shower and come back feeling refreshed. Having this time out makes me a better mum. I come back with more energy (mentally and physically) !

Create a routine:

Just like when you have a newborn, a routine is key. Does it always go to plan? No! But having one in place will not only help you make time to move but also you will be more likely to stick to it. Think of it as a non-negotiable meeting with yourself. If you have never worked out before or if you have but you’re getting back to it after having a child, I recommend exercising 2-3 times per week. Set a target number of workouts for the week for yourself and make it realistic for you.

Start off easy:

When exercising, it’s not about the weight you are lifting or how fast you are going. What matters the most is showing up! Consistency really is key here! Don’t worry if you are only lifting 1kg or your pace is slow, show up and do the workout. In time, the rest will come.

Involve your children:

On days where you have not scheduled a workout, keep moving. Take your kid/s to the park. for a swim or indoor play area. This way you will help you stay active and your family too! I do believe it’s so important for your children to see you exercise but if yours is anything like my little one, there is no chance of me getting in a good workout when he’s around, so I schedule a fun activity for us to do on my days out of the studio!

Find your tribe:

Find like-minded people who are also making fitness a part of their lifestyle. Group fitness classes like F45 Training are a great way to meet new people and make friends. Our welcoming community includes many pregnant and postnatal women who find our classes supportive and beneficial. We pride ourselves on having a community, there is no judgment and we are pleased that our members make life-long friends!
