When you get pregnant, everything becomes alarming. Any unusual feeling becomes something that worries you. Most mums become extremely anxious when they experience vaginal bleeding or spotting during their pregnancy. Here we will cover all that you need to know on this. From causes and reasons to treatment and what to look out for.
Why does vaginal bleeding happen?
First of all, most mums experience vaginal bleeding, especially during the first trimester. This makes them extremely anxious because they think it is happening because of a miscarriage. However, many studies show that around 30% of pregnant mums experience vaginal bleeding during their first trimester. But it did not result in a miscarriage. Usually, a miscarriage is not only accompanied by vaginal bleeding. But it also includes severe cramps and tissue passing. Anyhow, vaginal bleeding happens for many normal reasons that most mums experience. The best we can recommend is that you always keep your doctor informed about everything step by step.
Is it the same as spotting?
Vaginal spotting is also normal during pregnancy. However, it is different from vaginal bleeding. Spotting is literally just a spot or two of blood. It won’t even cover a panty liner. It is a normal discharge that is not alarming at all. In comparison with spotting, bleeding is heavier, and there is usually a reason behind it.
When does vaginal bleeding happen?
As we mentioned before, this usually happens during the first trimester. It is the most common time where pregnant mums experience it. Having said that, some mums experience it during their second or third trimester. The reasons behind it can be rare conditions or premature labor.
What causes vaginal bleeding?
- – Intercourse.
- – Implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus.
- – Infections.
- – Hormonal changes.
Those happen commonly during the first trimester, and you should not be alarmed because of them. In some cases, this bleeding might be more serious due to a miscarriage, a ectopic pregnancy, or a molar pregnancy. And that is why we advise you to keep communicating with your doctor at all times about all symptoms.
As for the causes of vaginal bleeding during the second and final trimester:
- – A sign that the body is preparing for labour.
- – The cervix dilates earlier than expected.
- – The placenta detaches from the uterus wall.
Again, keep sharing what you experience with your doctor to protect both you and your baby.
Can vaginal bleeding be treated?
Treatment usually depends on the cause. For example, if it is an infection, then the treatment is the antibiotics your doctor prescribes for you. Overall, the best and most common treatment is rest. So, make sure to protect both yourself and your baby by:
- – Taking time off work.
- – Sticking to bedrest.
- – Not having intercourse.
- – Avoiding travel.
- – Not using tampons.
When should I contact my doctor?
- When the bleeding is heavier than usual.
- If there were pain, contractions or cramping.
- If you feel dizzy along with the pain.
- When the pain is centered in the belly or pelvis.
- If you experience a chill or fever.
Overall, keep updating your doctor throughout your pregnancy. And in case you couldn’t reach your doctor, head to the emergency room immediately to be safe.
