Menstruation, ovulation, conception the process of getting pregnant might sound a little complicated to some of us. We know we’re supposed to count from period but what are we counting exactly? If you’re trying to have a baby, or even, avoiding a pregnancy, then we’re here to break down the process for you!
What is ovulation?
Ovulation occurs around two weeks before your period and it is the process in which eggs are formed. After which, one will erupt from the sac and descend into the fallopian tubes to await fertilization. The time span of which is about 24 hours. All the while the lining of your uterus thickens in preparation for fertilization.
Having intercourse when you’re ovulating is critical to getting pregnant.
Conception
All it takes is one single sperm to swim up the fallopian tube and fertilize the egg, in which case the egg will change in a way that will allow no other sperm to fertilize it. After about 4 days, the fertilized egg will move to the uterus and attach itself to the uterus wall, a process known as implantation
Implantation
After implantation your cervix is sealed with mucus, and the uterus wall will get thicker. At this stage you may notice spotting, bleeding and even cramping. Don’t worry, it’s a good thing! It means the fertilized egg is attaching itself to the uterus wall, cementing the pregnancy!
How do I increase my chances of getting pregnant?
Chart your Ovulation
For starters, make sure you’re having intercourse at the right time, usually around the time you’re ovulating. Otherwise, there’s no egg to fertilize! There are so many planners, guides, and apps out there meant to help women calculate and pinpoint their menstruation and ovulation periods in order to help ensure a pregnancy.
See a gynecologist
Book an appointment with your doctor for a preconception check-up, just to make sure everything is okay and you’re in the best shape possible to have a baby! For example, many women suffer from irregular cycles, which can affect fertility. If that’s the case, you’ll be able to discuss if you need treatment.
Avoid Stress
Don’t overthink it! Stressing out about whether or not you’re pregnant will subconsciously put pressure on your body and is a sure way to prevent a pregnancy.
Relax, try a few meditation or yoga exercises and try to get your mind off trying to conceive.
