Resilience: How to Raise Children With Grit!

Resilience: How to Raise Children With Grit!

What is resilience? Why is it so important? What are elements of it? And what should I be teaching my children? All the answers are here.

What is resilience?

Resilience is our mental reservoir and power to recover from setbacks and negatively perceived experiences, both mentally and emotionally. It not only includes ‘bounce-back’ ability but also ‘bounce-forward’ ability. Which is about how much stronger and better you can become at tackling the next challenge.

What are different elements of resilience?

  • – Mental Toughness.
  • – Overcoming Failure.
  • – Locus of Control.
  • – Problem Solving.
  • – Positive Coping Strategies.

Why is it important?

Mental health in general, especially among children, is a serious global concern. Almost 20% of children between 4-17 years, experience at least one mental disorder. This number has doubled during the last decade and grown six times in comparison to 20 years ago. By teaching children how to deal with change and pressure, we can help them manage difficult experiences more easily. And reduce the chances of them suffering from anxiety or any other stress-related mental disorders.

Are individuals and children inherently resilient?

Some people may have a natural ability and certain personality traits that could make them more resilient. But ultimately, resilience is a set of skills that we can learn, develop and strengthen.

What are strategies that parents can use to build resilience?

  • – Reward and encourage process, strategy and effort rather than results.
  • – Help them to develop an internal instead of external locus of control.
  • – Show them how to make friends and nurture relationships.
  • – Ensure that they adopt a fighter rather than victim mentality.
  • – Help them to set stretching but realistic challenges.
  • – Don’t prematurely jump to provide them with answers and solutions.
  • – Facilitate reflection after events and act as a coach, guiding them to solutions by asking the right questions.
  • – To a reasonable extent, allow for consequences to take place.
  • – Teach them to focus on their strengths and how to leverage them rather than constantly focusing on their development areas.
  • – Role model resilient behaviors.

Other than resilience, what else should we be teaching our children?

  • – Developing a growth mindset.
  • – Managing our mind and thoughts.
  • – Understanding and managing our own and others’ emotions.
  • – Developing social awareness and the ability to navigate social environments.
