Overcome insomnia with these tips and tricks

As moms, we all had one of those long sleepless nights. We spend hours in bed tossing and turning with no chance of falling asleep. And by morning, we are exhausted and worn out and the day hasn’t even started yet. A mum dealing with Insomnia makes it harder for her to deal with her little ones and care for them. Therefore, we gathered up some tips and tricks to help you overcome your insomnia in no time.

Tips to overcome insomnia

1| Insomnia is caused by electronics

Using electronics and phones before bed can be very consuming. Checking social media is one of the things we do right before bed – which is not good. Some people think that doing so helps them sleep. But it does not. In fact, it alerts your brain rather than helps it relax and prepare for sleep. Being away from UV lights produced by electronics and smartphones helps your body prepare for a good night’s sleep.

2| Pick a comfy pillow

Insomnia can be caused by an uncomfortable mattress or pillow. What you need is a comfortable pillow that supports your neck and reduces tension and stiffness. A good pillow also helps you breathe better which guarantees a good night’s sleep. If you are a new mum, there are plenty of pillow options which help you relax and drift into a deep sleep.

3| Keep a sleep routine

Following a good sleep routine helps your body and brain to prepare to relax and rest. As a mother, following this routine is important for you just as it is for your children. This helps you greatly to avoid feeling anxious, stressed, or over exhausted before bed which all can cause insomnia.

4| Prep your bedroom to overcome insomnia

A messy and cluttered room means insomnia. Sleeping in a clean room, a fresh set of bedding sheets helps you overcome insomnia easily. The best bedding sheet sets are always made of high quality cotton which helps you relax.

5| Use essential oils and candles

Many essential oils, such as lavender oil, help you relax both physically and mentally. There are many other oils that reduce stress and help you sleep.

6| Plan a daily sleep routine just for yourself

Nothing gives you a good night’s sleep more than a good routine just for you. It can be taking a warm shower, doing your skin care routine, and slipping into comfy jammies. A good warm bubble bath before bed really helps you relax and sleep well.

7| Drink something calming before bedtime

Late night eating and heavy meals before bed can cause insomnia. Also sleeping hungry is not a valid option. The best thing to do before bed is having a light snack like some fruits or a yogurt cup. Also drinking herbal teas help your tummy relax and it will help you feel full but not too full. A warm beverage before bed is the perfect recipe like a cup of chamomile tea.

8| Read before bed

Reading or writing before bed helps you sleep as well. Choosing a nice and calming book to help your brain set for sleep. Try to avoid thriller or scary books which will alert your brain and disrupt your sleep. Keeping a journal by your bedside also helps you clear your mind and relax.

9| Night time yoga

There are plenty of calming exercises that help your body relax and clear your mind. Breathing exercises and night time yoga both do the trick.

10| Try pink noise to overcome insomnia

Pink noise is a type of sound that helps adults sleep better. White noise like television or a vacuum sound helps babies sleep. But as for adults, pink noise is more suited. Such sounds can be the sound of raindrops, cracking fire, winds, or beach waves. There are plenty of mobile apps that provide those sounds with an option to set an off timer so it would not disrupt your sleep.
