My name is Dema Haddadin Qusous, I have been living in Canada for 4 years now. Me, my husband and my 4 kids moved from our home country to Canada in a search for better opportunities in education for my kids, work for us and to enjoy the diversity and inclusion of this wonderful society. As parents, my husband and I believed that this multiculturalism will be a great opportunity for our children to meet people from all around the world in one place and explore new experiences. During my past years, as a computer studies graduate, I managed to work in different areas, started with programming, technical documentation, creating user manuals and office management. After I had my children I discovered that I have this passion for kids that I never thought I had, so I started teaching IT for grades 1-11 for 9 years in 2 of the leading international schools in Amman. Here in Canada, a dear friend of mine who has a great passion to our heritage and mother language, decided to start a language center to teach the Arab children Arabic language out of her belief and passion that our children abroad need to maintain their mother language. So I stood by her in perusing her dream and making this vision a reality. I managed the office, built the curriculums and goals to be taught and accomplished, managed the registration and follow up with the parents. And now the center has more than 65 students, with parents from all over our Arab countries sharing stories every time they meet, whether it is a success, a stress, or just socializing.

Habaybna.net is aى online resource and learning hub that provides specialized content on developmental disabilities in Arabic throughout the Arab region. The platform was launched in December 2017 aims to empower parents by providing customized knowledge – in Arabic – through articles and video interviews with experts giving practical guidance, as well as interviews with parents sharing their personal experiences and recommendations. Another important goal of Habaybna.net is to contest the negative stereotypes facing children with disability and focus on their special talents instead. The founders, Reem and Mohammed Alafranji got inspired to establish Habaybna.net from their own journey with their two sons with developmental disability. Aboud and Amro both have a Global Developmental Delay, which the parents accidentally discovered in 2009. “The name of the new online resource, Habaybna means “Our beloved ones” in Arabic, Reem Alafranji explains. “It reflects our firm belief that our children are our beloved ones regardless of their abilities.” When Reem and Mohammed discovered their children’s challenges, they tried to find out where to start their new life journey and how to best support their sons. “It turned out we couldn’t find any reliable resources in Arabic that would provide guidance and practical information,” Mohammed says. There were many websites and articles in English but that information was not customized to an Arab audience, and did not explain which resources and services were available in the Arab countries. “Clearly, this is a major challenge in the Middle East for parents with children who have developmental disabilities, so we decided to do something to address this”, Reem says. Fighting stereotypes Many parents with children with disabilities not only face information shortages but also negative stereotypes in society about their children. In the media, children with disabilities always look miserable or helpless. “It was not until we had our sons attending the right and specialized programs, that we started to change our perspective and realize that children with disabilities are just like anyone else, they are gifted and have talents,” Reem says. “What they need is to get the specialized programs that cater to their uniqueness. With a bit of awareness and alternative thinking, children with disabilities can be included in the community and become active members.” The online platform Habaybna.net aims to provide specialized Arabic content and resources on developmental disabilities, and to collect and share the knowledge and experiences of families with similar journeys throughout the Middle East in addition to specialists share their experiences. The platform includes a video library featuring specialists and parents, useful articles and soon, a directory with resources and services available in MENA for people with developmental disabilities and their families.

Maureen is a mother of 3 and a KonMari Certified Consultant based in Dubai, UAE. As a child, at work and in her daily life, Maureen considered herself tidy, organized and in-control of her space. However, six months after giving birth to her youngest daughter, she started to feel overwhelmed in coping with the daily challenges of motherhood. She realized that she was mostly doing housework instead of enjoying quality time with her family. She believes however, that in order to be a better mum, she should be intentional in finding balance especially with the demands of raising young children. She acted by finding ways to improve herself, learning new recipes, reading books, trying new activities and delegating. As the Buddhist proverb says, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” That’s when she came across Marie Kondo’s first book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”. The brilliant principles of the book didn’t just help her put her living space in order, but also transformed her in so many ways. The one principle that hit her right into her heart was the 3rd basic rule of tidying which is “FINISH DISCARDING FIRST”. Marie Kondo explained that to truly cherish the things that are important to you, you must first discard those that don’t. It should be done however, by carefully assessing each of your possessions and to let go with gratitude. That simple rule allowed her to enjoy more time with her family, appreciate life more, find inner peace and recognize the things that truly matter. Because of these life-changing improvements in her life, she decided to become a KonMari Consultant and lead a life of significance by helping people especially mothers find what is truly important for them through the art of tidying. She looks forward to the pleasure of being part of someone’s journey in achieving their ideal home, as she believes that a tidy home is a happy home.

Above all, we wanted to provide parents with all the information and reviews they need to make the best decisions about gear for their newborn, educational toys for their little whizz kids, books for their preschooler or wardrobes for their pre-teen. After celebrating our 5 year birthday last year as the leading online retailer in the Middle East, this mission still holds true.

Mother of four and proud grandmother of 10, Andalene Salvesen has fondly become known as Super Granny under the auspices of the Munchkins brand. Her extensive expertise, stemming from being a stay-at-home mom, with an unparalleled passion for children, and later owning and heading up a mother & child workshop for 12 years, and a nursery school in Cape Town for 8 years, inspired her to combine her practical knowledge and valuable experience to help desperate parents. In conjunction with a Professor in Psychology and many qualified mentors, she proceeded to develop a parenting course, which she has now been presenting for the past 20 years. This course addresses a host of everyday parenting challenges. Never expecting it to take to flight so successfully, her popular parenting talks, naturally proceeded to evolve into a personal service that includes private home visits to families with one-on-one attention given to their particular needs. For the past 11 years, she has helped families by coaching them through issues such as, but not limited to: tantrums; sleeping; eating and discipline problems; as well as healthy boundaries; understanding unique temperaments, and many more related parenting challenges. Having a twin sister as well as a daughter who birthed three premmies (a singleton born at 32 weeks and twins born at 30 weeks), also gives her special insight and empathy into the unique challenges faced by parents with twins and premmies.

Tanya Fakhoury is a Peaceful Parenting Coach and creator of the Peaceful Parenting Program that helps children grow into independent and responsible adults with high emotional intelligence. Having studied from the official coaching school of Tony Robbins, she practices a type of coaching called Strategic Intervention that uses the most practical and effective forms of strategic actions and communication, rather than quick fixes, to enhance the parent-child relationship. “In order for children to thrive and grow to be resilient and well adapted adults, parents must learn how to apply empathy in their approach to upbringing,” believes Tanya, “There is still such a low level of awareness of basic concepts yet these are easily learnt skills and crucial to help mothers become, peaceful, calm, relaxed and happy” The EFG’s of parenting programme has been a labour of love for Tanya. After the birth of her daughter, she experienced a postpartum depression that lead to her seeking help through coaching. Having undergone an emotional transformation, she applied everything she learnt to her own children, attended workshops, professional training and conducted extensive research. She was passionate to help as many families as possible. Initially, she conducted her training in the park for free, teaching nannies and mothers how to apply her techniques. Tanya has since assisted hundreds of families in becoming more emotionally intelligent, building personal and authentic connections with each client.
